Year-by-Year College Planning

The following is an overview of the academic and college advising services we offer our students in Upper School

The transition into high school is a critical period for students to adapt to new routines and explore their interests. During this time, counselors introduce students to the expectations of high school and help them develop a four-year plan that aligns with their academic and career goals. Freshmen are encouraged to focus on consistent academic progress and consider participating in summer programs that enhance their career interests.

Sophomores begin to take a more active role in shaping their academic journey. They learn test-taking strategies for the PSAT as part of their core courses and take the PLAN test in October, which provides insights for both college-bound students and those exploring immediate career paths. Counselors help students assess their strengths and guide them in creating a personalized testing plan to align with their future college or career aspirations.

In junior year, students tackle more challenging coursework and start to seriously evaluate their post-secondary options. Counselors provide workshops on various aspects of college readiness and hold individual meetings with students and families to refine their academic and career objectives. By the end of the year, students will have compiled a tailored list of colleges and universities that match their interests and goals. The counseling office maintains an open-door policy to ensure ongoing access to guidance and support.

Senior year focuses on turning aspirations into actionable steps. Counselors work with students to finalize college application strategies, while teachers distribute materials on SAT/ACT registration, financial aid, and scholarships. Organizational skills and time management become crucial as seniors balance academics with the application process.
